A long awaited birth- the story behind Precious One

14 years ago I was reeling from becoming a new mother and processing the very real trauma associated with a less than ideal birth.

One night in the car after arriving home to our Norfolk cottage in England, the lyrics for precious one came pouring out of me. Words of hope, peace and reaffirmation.

Jon and I had the opportunity to play precious one at the Ely Folk festival in 2012, but in early 2013 our big move over the pond happened and lots of “life”.

Writing Precious One helped me manifest an amazing birth experience for the arrival of our second son in 2014.

I surrounded myself with amazing women who believed in my ability to safely birth my baby. Two midwives, a doula and close friends were by my side as Faolán came into the world, at home, in the water, telling me tales of all that had happened on the other side- if only I could have understood his little noises 💞

In 2021, Jon and I finally got around to recording Precious one, in our camper on the road somewhere lol. At that time I laboured again to create a beautiful video slideshow of incredible women who shared their birthing photographs with me. I posted this to YouTube back then, and since, Precious One has been sleeping. The perfectionist in me wanted to go back and re-do the vocals and re-master but it’s time to let it go……

In December we celebrate not only the birth of the baby Jesus, but also the annual rebirth of our sun on the Winter solstice, as we, once more, move towards lighter and brighter days. The timing was perfect for release on December 20th 2024.

It’s an ode to the unbounding love, strength and resilience of women. With raw emotion and a soothing melody, this song honors the beauty and hope of birth and venerates the innate wisdom of both mother and babe.

I hope you enjoy it and share it with all the wonderful mothers and mothers-to-be in your world.

I want to end this post by thanking my elite birth squad, Brenda, Marybeth and Lauren. Also huge thanks to all the women who shared their beautiful photos with me, allowing me to create the video for Precious One
